Tokyo-2001: Scanning Probe Microscopy, Sensors and Nanostructures

Call for Papers

Cells and Bio-Membranes Session

Dear Colleague,

We would like to invite you to contribute to the session on Cells and Bio-Membranes that will be held at the Tokyo-2001 Conference: Scanning Probe Microscopy, Sensors and Nanostructures, from May 27 - 31, 2001, in Makuhari, Japan. With this meeting, the organizers wish to keep alive the multidisciplinary spirit of the Scanning Microscopy meetings organized in the past by Om Johari, where biologists, physicists and chemists had many fruitful discussions.

In the session on Cells and Bio-Membranes we would like to emphasize the work on living cells, including both imaging and non imaging applications. This particularly includes investigations of cellular dynamics and the use of force measurements (adhesion measurement, specific interactions and mechanics). Indeed, the number of teams involved in cell SPM is rapidly growing. However, routinely obtaining data, improving lateral resolution, maintaining cell viability and controlling the responsiveness of cells to effectors often remain major problems. The exchange of theoretical and practical information between groups working on different cell types and under various experimental conditions can significantly improve our common use of the SPM. Beside studies on living cells, papers dealing with work on fixed cells or isolated biological membranes, which can help in the understanding and interpretation of the data obtained in living cells, will also be welcome.

Registration for the Cell Session goes through the normal channel (see Abstract Submission form). In order to organize this session, we would appreciate that you let us know your intention to participate in this Cell Symposium. In addition, we will appreciate your help in bringing this to the attention of those who may be interested in contributing or attending.

See you in Tokyo, With kind regards,

Yours sincerely,
