Researchers from the Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo have resolved a long-standing mystery of ion hydration. Their improved understanding of the ionic field explains water dynamics around ions, such as accelerating versus decelerating water dynamics as well as the wide range of water residence times observed around different ions. These findings will help researchers optimize upcoming sustainable energy storage devices and biomedical technologies.
