Researchers from the Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo have resolved a long-standing mystery of the elastic heterogeneity exhibited by soft porous materials. They related guest adsorption and desorption to the shape and hardness of domains within metal-organic frameworks, as well as to corresponding entropic and energetic contributors. These findings will be foundational to minimizing the experimental trial-and-error that can hinder the development of advanced batteries and other materials.
