Researchers from Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo found that a mutual information estimator based on a dual reporter system successfully measured information flow to an output (bacterial chemotaxis) without needing to measure the input (extrinsic signals). This approach could be used to quantify information flow in a wide range of cellular signaling pathways, such as neural circuits and developmental processes.
