Researchers from the Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo have studied the process of forming local amorphous ordering to reveal how colloidal gels become solids. They found that small to large local structures sequentially form and lower the potential energy, unlike in glass formation, and these elementary structures impart different roles in gelation. These findings will provide insights that guide the design of various gels for biological and medical applications.
