An Institute of Industrial Science, The University of Tokyo led team investigated the electron transport through a single water molecule in a C60 cage (H2O@C60). Using H2O@C60 as a single molecule transistor they measured tunneling and terahertz spectroscopy and observed quantum rotational excitations for both ortho- and para-water. This revealed that an ortho-para fluctuation occurred within the timeframe of the experiment--approximately one minute--which is expected to impact fundamental research across chemistry, biology, and astrophysics.
