Researchers from The University of Tokyo Institute of Industrial Science used optical microscopy to investigate the formation of onion surfactant structures. The question of whether onions are composed of perfect seamless layers, or contain defects, was probed for the formation of onions from surfactant sponges. It was found that formation led to defects around the center axis that may limit cargo containment. The findings are expected to contribute to the development of drug delivery systems.
