Project Professor Tadatsugu Taniguchi Elected as International Member of the National Academy of Medicine (NAM)

On October 17, 2016 in Washington DC, USA, the National Academy of Medicine (NAM) announced at its annual conference the new members who have been invited to join the Academy. Project Professor Tadatsugu Taniguchi of the Institute of Industrial Science (who also serves as co-director of the Max Planck-The University of Tokyo Center for Integrative Inflammology) has been elected as one of the Academy's new international members.

Being selected as an international member of NAM is considered to be the one of the most prestigious honors in the areas of health and medicine. Membership signifies that the member's achievements in their specialty are outstanding and that their commitment to their work has been recognized.

Existing members can elect new members by voting for individuals who have deep commitment to areas such as medical science, medical care or public health. To maintain its diversity, the Academy also ensures that those from non-medical sectors such as law, engineering, social science and cultural sciences comprise at least a quarter of all of its members.

NAM, established in 1970 under the name Institute of Medicine (IOM), is an independent organization of eminent professionals from diverse fields including health and medicine; the natural, social, and behavioral sciences; and beyond. It serves alongside the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering as adviser to the United States and the international community.
