Crystal formation processes at two colloid concentrations observed by three-dimensional confocal microscopy.
Crystal formation processes at two colloid concentrations observed by three-dimensional confocal microscopy.

Researchers at the Institute of Industrial Science University of Tokyo, Professor Hajime Tanaka and phD student Shunto Arai (currently, Assistant Professor at Department of Engineering), have revealed, by using both experiments and numerical simulations, that matching of the angular symmetry between locally favored structures formed in a supercooled liquid and the most stable crystal and non-trivial coupling of the former to substrate-induced layering in the liquid play crucial roles in wall-induced single-crystal formation.
