SCOPE AND PURPOSE丂![]() |

Growing concern and enthusiastic debate in
the last decade has resulted in a consensus
that continuous customization is the most
significant parameter for ecological and
social sustainability of housing. However,
there are only a limited number of carefully
documented good practices of continuous customization
in housing where user satisfaction is given
a high priority. In order to generate a holistic
approach toward socially, economically and
ecologically sustainable housing in the new
millennium, there is a great need to share
knowledge and lessons among practitioners
and researchers. This conference of the CIB
W104 (formerly TG26) Open Building Implementation
aims to provide the opportunity for such
an exchange of viewpoints and experiences.
The key question that should be discussed
in the conference is;
How could we customize housing continuously
during the life cycle respecting both changing
users'needs and urban context?
The conference aims to generate a renewed understanding and fusion between practitioners and researchers by providing two kinds of sessions; paper presentation sessions and workshop sessions. The paper presentation sessions will be organized in a way similar to other CIB symposia: formal papers delivered in a lecture setting. In contrast, the workshops are a new attempt to stimulate fruitful dialogue. In the workshops, case studies will be presented, as a way to focus the attention of both practitioners and researchers on both detailed and broad issues of best practices of continuous customization.
The conference also aims to generate geographical fusion between the East and the West. Demographic pressures in Asia provide enormous potential to introduce open building as a useful approach to solving the massive problems of constructing millions of housing units in the coming decade. In the West, both new construction and renovation of sustainable, adaptable housing pose serious challenges. It is expected the exchange of views and experiences among delegates from the East and the West would create global visions of the benefits of and impediments to open building implementation.
1 Theory and methodology of continuous customization
2 Management of continuous customization in housing
3 Design of adaptable buildings for continuous customization
4 Modernization of existing housing estates

7 Contribution of continuous customization to sustainability
TOPICS OF CASE ILLUSTRATIONS
The case illustration sessions aim to identify best practices in continuous customization in housing by means of case studies of realized projects from around the world. Each presentation will be structured to address a number of key questions and practices. These cases will be used to stimulate debate and discussion among both practitioners and researchers, facilitated by experienced moderators. Case Studies can include projects in the following categories:
