Scanning tunneling microscope has been miniaturized to work simultaneously within an UHV electron microscope. Such combination has allowed us to see structure and conductance of gold quantum point contact (QPC) simultaneously[1,2]. By using reflection electron microscopy, REM-STM combination also showed strain of the Si(111)7x7 surface induced by a STM tip which approaches to and withdrows from the surface[3]. Future development of this technique is to develop an STM-Scanning Transmission Electron Microscope (STM) with a super nano electron beam (less than atom size), which gives us rich informations on chemistry and physics of nanoscale materials.
